The village is the basic human unit for survival. Many cultures consider the village to be the true individual, since an individual person could not survive on their own without a village.

In contrast, capitalist society emphasizes the individual person as the basic unit in order to create a dependance on the market economy. It puts every human in competition against every other human.

Villages are made up of people who have or take on different skills to assist in the functioning of the village as a unit. Some of these skills are oriented toward assisting other villages with their needs as well.

The ecovillage is an attempt to restore the self reliance of the village in a manner that works with nature instead of against it.
